What is soy protein?
Soy protein is a complete protein that is among the top ranked in the Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score (PDCAAS). Soy protein is generally very low in or free of fat, cholesterol, and lactose.  It is derived from soy beans.

Soy protein is so much more than just something you can throw in a protein shake.  It can be used as a meat substitute and is approved for those who are lactose intolerant.  Soy protein can also act as a flour substitute in cooking, making high protein, low fat foods.

How can I benefit from soy protein?
Aside from being a great way to get non-animal protein into your diet, soy protein has a vast array of positive effects on the body.  Soy protein contains saponins, phytoserols and isoflavones.  Saponins encourage healthy immune system function and binds with cholestorol to decrease it’s absorption into the body through the small intestine, as do phytosterols.  Genistein and daidzein, the anabolic isoflavones in soy, act as powerful antioxidants and provide positive health benefits for both men and women.

Who needs soy protein?
Soy protein is not a necessity in your daily diet and therefore is not associated with a deficiency.  However, if you don’t take it, you will not be able to reap the benefits.  Soy protein is most beneficial for women, but men can also achieve positive results from it.

How much soy should I take?
Before starting a soy protein supplement, consult your physician if you are taking any prescription drugs as soy contains a compound called phytic that can interfere with mineral absorption..  Also, a very small percentage of people experience allergic reactions to soy.

Once you’re confident the soy protein is the right supplement for you, it can be taken safely in a wide range of doses.
