L-Glutamine is an amino acid that is found in protein powders, meats, poultry, beans, dairy and L-Glutamine supplements.

Does L-Glutamine work?
Glutamine plays a critical role in maintaining a high level of performance in the gut and immune system.  Up to 60% of the free-form amino acids found in skeletal muscle is L-Glutamine.  When taken as a supplement, L-Glutamine can help body builders decrease the amount of muscle deterioration occurring as other tissues use up the body’s natural supply.

An intense workout can reduce the body’s glutamine levels as much as 50%.  Because the body relies so heavily on glutamine to fuel the immune system, supplementing glutamine can improve protein metabolism and decrease muscle tissue breakdown. 

European hospitals regularly administer glutamine supplements to patients after they have experienced stress or trauma.  While no formal studies have been done, it has recently been shown that an intake of as little as 2 grams of free-form L-glutamine can increase growth hormone levels by 400%.

Symptoms of Glutamine
Body builders can be particularly susceptible to health problems because so much of their glutamine is used while working out.  The immune system is dependent on L-glutamine and when supplemented into the diet it can help you stay healthy.

When the body uses its supply of glutamine for nitrogen transport or to maintain the immune system, the result can be a break down of muscle.  A glutamine supplement can definitely assist your body in keeping muscles increasing in mass instead of deteriorating.

Side Effects of Glutamine
There are no studies determining the correct amount of L-glutamine that should be ingested each day, but body builders seem to benefit from 10 grams on a daily basis. Because L-glutamine occurs naturally in the body, there are no side effects associated with it.  If a large quantity of L-glutamine is ingested, it may cause an upset stomach, so a smaller dose is recommended.
